Historic Alabama college brings back football games after 80 year absence
President Franklin Roosevelt was president, and the county was in the midst of World War II the last time this college hosted football.
Football is returning to the campus of Talladega College for the first time in 80 years. The historic institution, which last fielded a team during the era of World War II and President Franklin Roosevelt, is ready to breathe new life into its gridiron legacy.
A New Era for Talladega Athletics
College leadership recently unveiled a strategic partnership with Prep U Collegiate, set to commence in Fall 2026. Through this collaboration, Prep U Collegiate student-athletes will enroll at Talladega College while competing in a club football program, with select games scheduled to be hosted directly on campus.
"This partnership represents much more than football," said Talladega College President Willie L. Todd Jr. "Those students participating in this sport will also have the opportunity to experience our commitment to academic excellence."
Reconnecting with History
Before the program was discontinued during World War II, Talladega College was a formidable powerhouse, earning Black College Football National Championship titles in 1921 and 1922. By integrating these new student-athletes into the wider campus community, the college aims to honor its past while building toward the future.
"Overall, this joint venture enhances the student experience, increases campus engagement, and reconnects us with an important part of our history," Todd added.
Looking Toward the Future
This initiative serves as a major step in ongoing discussions regarding a potential return to varsity football. The Talladega College board of trustees authorized a feasibility study for a football program in 2021, and internal surveys at the time indicated strong support from faculty and staff.
According to those surveys, the return of football is viewed as a catalyst for boosting student enrollment, improving retention, and securing new sponsorships and donations, all while driving school spirit at the historic campus.
"This collaboration provides our student-athletes with a strong academic foundation and a meaningful collegiate experience both on and off the field," said Marqucee Richardson, president of Prep U Collegiate. Follow 205focus.com for further updates as the program prepares for its 2026 launch.
