VA kicks off new program to help veterans avoid home foreclosure: Here’s who qualifies right now
The program "will help keep thousands of Veterans in their homes,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.
The Department of Veterans Affairs has officially launched a new initiative designed to protect veterans from home foreclosure. The program, which kicked off this week, provides a critical safety net for those struggling to keep up with their mortgage payments.
How the Partial Claim Program Works
Through the VA Partial Claim Program, eligible beneficiaries can receive assistance to cover missed mortgage payments. A key feature of the initiative is its flexibility regarding repayment; homeowners are only required to pay back these funds when they eventually sell their property, refinance their loan, or settle the loan in full.
VA Secretary Doug Collins expressed the department's commitment to housing security for service members. “We are grateful to Congress and President Trump for creating VA’s Partial Claim Program, which will help keep thousands of Veterans in their homes,” Collins stated.
Eligibility and Program Details
According to Military.com, the program is generally restricted to a single partial claim per loan. However, there is a specific provision for homeowners facing hardships linked to a Presidential disaster declaration, which may permit a second claim in those instances.
The program stems from the VA Home Loan Reform Act, which was signed into law on July 30, 2025. Support is available exclusively for VA-guaranteed home loans. In addition to mortgage payments, the assistance can be applied toward past-due property taxes, homeowners insurance premiums, and homeowners association dues, providing a comprehensive resource for veterans in financial distress.
