Watch Blake Shelton’s emotional close to ACM Awards

The 2026 ACM Awards came to an emotional close this past Sunday as Blake Shelton took the stage for a heartfelt tribute to the legendary songwriter Don Schlitz.

A Musical Tribute to a Legend

Shelton honored the iconic writer with a powerful rendition of Kenny Rogers’ timeless classic, "The Gambler." Schlitz, who passed away in April at the age of 73 following a sudden illness, originally penned the track that became synonymous with Rogers' career.

Originally recorded in 1978, "The Gambler" was a massive crossover success that broke barriers for country music. The song went on to be certified five times platinum by the RIAA, earning both a Grammy for Best Country Song in 1978 and the CMA Song of the Year honor in 1979.

An Unmatched Legacy

As a Grand Ole Opry member and a country music hall of famer, Schlitz cemented his place in history as one of the genre's most influential figures. His catalog includes massive hits like Randy Travis' "On the Other Hand" and "Forever and Ever, Amen," as well as "He Thinks He’ll Keep Her" by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and works for artists like The Judds, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Tanya Tucker.

His songwriting prowess was further showcased by his collaboration with Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers on "You Can’t Make Old Friends," which marked the pair's first duet since the iconic "Islands in the Stream."

Schlitz's storied career saw him named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year for four straight years between 1988 and 1991. Throughout his tenure, he secured three CMA Song of the Year awards, two ACM Song of the Year awards, and two Grammys, eventually earning an induction into the Nashville Songwriters Association Hall of Fame in 1993.

Schlitz is survived by his wife Stacey; his children, Cory Dixon and Pete Schlitz; his grandchildren, Roman, Gia, Isla, and Lilah; his brother Brad; and his sister Kathy Hinkley. As reported by 205focus.com, his impact on the fabric of country music remains unparalleled.
