For many, a race in a downpour would be an obstacle. For Whitesburg Christian standout Lillie Meeks, it was a beautiful backdrop for a triumphant return to competition.

That rain-soaked race marked the first time Meeks had laced up her running shoes after battling Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that tested her physical and mental limits. She recalls the experience with a smile: “It was horrible race conditions to anyone else, but I love running in the rain. I ran it so slow, but I was just happy to be running.”

Statewide Recognition

Meeks' incredible journey from a hospital bed to the podium has earned her the 2026 Jimmy Smothers Courage Award, presented by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. She is set to receive the honor on Sunday at Jacksonville State University.

The diagnosis arrived early in her junior year when she began experiencing numbness and weakness that quickly escalated into a fight for her basic functions. What began as minor numbness in her lip progressed to difficulty swallowing, talking, and eventually struggling to breathe. Meeks spent five days at Huntsville Hospital before transferring to Birmingham for an intensive two-week stint of physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

A Remarkable Comeback

Despite facing a recovery process that doctors often estimate can take years, Meeks defied expectations. She quickly reclaimed her form, even hitting a major milestone in her recovery by successfully passing a swallow test—promptly celebrating with a steak to prove her progress.

Returning to her Whitesburg Christian teammates, Meeks leaned on her support system as she rebuilt her endurance. The results speak for themselves: in her first season back, she helped the Warriors secure a Class 4A cross country title. She continued to shine as a senior, contributing to a "triple crown" of championships across cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track and field.

At the 2025 Class 3A state tournament, she dominated the 1,600-meter run with a 5:17.78 finish and captured top-six placements in both the 800-meter and 3,200-meter events. Her coach, Mark Marshall, describes her success as a product of pure resolve: “She just won’t accept no. She’s determined, she’s headstrong in a good way, but she’s very compassionate and caring.”

Looking Ahead

Meeks' athletic journey is far from over. She has signed to compete at the University of North Alabama under head coach Connor Callahan. As she prepares for the next level, she maintains the same positive, faith-driven perspective that carried her through her illness: “How you approach a situation mentally definitely affects the outcome very greatly... The way you think is who you become.”
