Why Auburn is expecting chaos when Argentina faces Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium
Auburn is deploying additional field personnel and Alabama law enforcement escorts to manage crowds at the Argentina-Iceland friendly, where the global soccer star is expected to draw massive attendance.
In the world of soccer, a fan sprinting onto the pitch is a rare occurrence that usually draws more head-scratching than anything else. However, the stakes escalate when you track the numbers; the 2018 World Cup alone saw an eye-opening 170 instances of unauthorized fans on the field.
The Messi Effect
This week, the atmosphere at Jordan-Hare Stadium will be put to the test as the global superstar Lionel Messi arrives in Auburn. The so-called “Messi Effect” is well-documented, as the Argentine icon consistently shatters attendance records and packs massive venues worldwide, creating an electric, high-pressure environment for event organizers.
Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium is gearing up to host the international friendly between Argentina and Iceland this Tuesday, and the university is taking no chances. With a massive turnout expected, officials are implementing enhanced security protocols to maintain order.
Strategic Security Measures
"We have a lot of different people involved from a national and international perspective to ensure that when Lionel Messi and Iceland arrive, our first-time visitors have a safe and secure environment," said Senior Associate AD of Operations Jeremy Roberts. He added that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will mirror the high-level escort protocols typically reserved for Saturday SEC football games.
The operational plan includes placing a higher density of personnel on the field to monitor the stands and deter intrusions. Roberts noted that the university consulted with Texas A&M, which previously hosted international soccer matches. Their advice? While the goal is zero intrusions, the university is mentally prepared for the reality of the situation. "We would like zero, but we understand there may be a possibility of someone wanting to come on the field. So, we are prepared for that with our security partners," Roberts explained.
While Messi was present for warmups during Argentina's recent friendly against Honduras at Texas A&M, he did not see playing time. As the excitement builds for the upcoming match, kickoff between Argentina and Iceland is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.
