50 players Alabama fans need to know: This young TE can be ‘really fearless’
This rising sophomore could play a huge role in Alabama football's offense next season, as the Tide looks to replace Josh Cuevas.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Between now and the unofficial kickoff to the football preseason at SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is highlighting one standout Alabama football player each day. Today, we turn our attention to sophomore tight end Kaleb Edwards.
The Breakdown: Kaleb Edwards
Kaleb Edwards, Tight End
6-foot-6, 268 pounds, El Dorado Hills, Calif.
As a true freshman, Kaleb Edwards wasted no time making his presence felt in Tuscaloosa. The highly-anticipated recruit hit the ground running, appearing in all 15 of Alabama’s games and earning the starting nod six times. A product of Alabama's successful recruiting pipeline into California, Edwards proved his worth immediately, hauling in 11 catches for 150 yards and a score during his debut campaign.
A Fearless Playmaker
Edwards’ consistent development earned him Freshman All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches. Head coach Kalen DeBoer has been vocal about the tight end’s toughness, specifically highlighting a critical crossing route reception Edwards made against Georgia in a tight window.
"Number one, Ty (Simpson) is trusting him, and then Kaleb going across really fearless," DeBoer noted last November. The head coach also praised Edwards for his rapid acclimation to the team's culture, noting that the young tight end caught up quickly despite not enrolling early like many of his peers.
Stepping Into a Larger Role
The departure of Josh Cuevas leaves a void in the Crimson Tide’s offensive scheme, creating a prime opportunity for Edwards to expand his influence in 2026. However, the path to primary playing time remains competitive. Alabama has added Oklahoma State transfer Josh Ford to the rotation, while returnees Jay Lindsey and Marshall Pritchett are also pushing for reps.
While the competition is deep, many eyes remain on the high ceiling of the position group. With a productive spring behind him—including two catches for 26 yards during the A-Day scrimmage—Edwards is looking to anchor an offense that aims to make a significant statement this season.
COMING SUNDAY: We take a closer look at Crimson Tide linebacker Luke Metz.
