Pittsburgh’s Mike McCarthy thinks the wide receiver will be “an excellent fit” for the NFL team.

Steelers coach on rookie from Alabama: ‘Football comes easy to him’

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a calculated move on April 24, using a second-round pick to secure Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard. As the team transitions into the next phase of their offseason, Bernard is set to hit the practice field with the full squad this Monday.

Building the Future

Selected at No. 47 overall, Bernard joined the roster after Pittsburgh orchestrated a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, swapping their 53rd, 135th, and 237th picks for the 47th and 249th selections. For Bernard, the high draft capital is a clear sign of the organization's faith in his potential. As Bernard noted, he is ready to translate that trust into explosive plays and team success.

Following his performance at the team’s rookie minicamp, Bernard traveled to Los Angeles for the NFL Players Association’s 32nd annual Rookie Premiere. He now pivots back to Pittsburgh for the start of Phase 3 offseason programming, which features non-contact field drills including 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 sessions.

A Seamless Transition

Steelers coach Mike McCarthy has been impressed by the rookie’s immediate grasp of the playbook. "Football comes easy to him," McCarthy said. "His understanding is very high. Doesn't blink. I love his demeanor." The coaching staff views Bernard’s versatility as a critical asset, a trait he sharpened during his two-season tenure at Alabama, where he recorded 114 receptions for 1,656 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Bernard is embracing the challenge of learning the intricacies of the offense. He emphasized that he is working hard to master every receiver position to maximize his opportunities on the field.

The Receiver Room Outlook

The Steelers are looking to revitalize their receiving corps. While DK Metcalf led the team last year with 850 yards, and free-agent addition Michael Pittman Jr. brings veteran experience with a 1,000-yard track record, the roster is heavy on youth. Bernard is currently the youngest receiver in the group at 22 years old.

Though he earned the nickname "Unc" at Alabama due to his mature perspective on life, he is focused on being a high-energy contributor. For more comprehensive coverage on the Steelers and the rest of the league, check out our NFL page.
