AHSAA softball: Keep up with live updates from Thursday’s state tournament action

After a lightning-delayed Wednesday left tournament brackets in flux, the AHSAA state softball tournament is back in full swing in Oxford. Fans can expect a jam-packed Thursday as three champions are slated to be crowned.

Kinston Claims 1A Title

The Class 1A championship series kicked off at 9 a.m. at Choccolocco Park, with No. 2 Kinston securing their third all-time state championship in an 8-0 victory over Hackleburg. Lilli Sumblin led the charge for the Bulldogs, delivering a dominant performance with seven strikeouts and a 2-hitter. Sumblin also contributed offensively with a triple and three RBIs. Despite a seventh-inning push by Hackleburg's Mariela Garcia and Heidi Hudson, the Kinston defense held firm to seal the title.

Action Across the Brackets

Class 2A and Class 7A are working toward their respective title games today following yesterday's postponements, while the Class 3A bracket continues its pursuit of a champion, which will be crowned on Friday.

In Class 7A elimination play, Hewitt-Trussville made a major statement by defeating Austin 14-4. The Huskies were propelled by Erin Coleman’s walk-off, two-run double and a significant offensive showing from Kylie Hendrick. Hewitt-Trussville now prepares to face Vestavia Hills with a trip to the 7A championship on the line.

The Class 3A scene saw early intensity as well. Colbert County powered past Glenwood 8-2, while J.U. Blacksher advanced in Class 2A after an 11-4 win over North Sand Mountain. Throughout the morning, key performances included Ellie Cox’s grand slam for Wicksburg and an inside-the-park home run by Austin’s Amiya Garth.

Staying Ahead of the Weather

While the focus remains on the diamond, eyes are also turned to the skies. According to 205focus.com, the weather forecast for Oxford includes the possibility of thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. Organizers and fans are keeping a close watch on the radar, hoping to avoid further delays as the tournament races to the finish line.
