Alabama changes WIC eligibility guidelines: See who now qualifies
More Alabama families could now qualify for food assistance.
More Alabama families now have a clearer path to securing food assistance through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed on Tuesday that updated income guidelines for 2026 have officially expanded eligibility across the state.
Who qualifies for WIC?
The program is specifically designed to support pregnant women, those who have delivered a baby within the last six months, and mothers who are currently breastfeeding. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific income thresholds, which are set at 185 percent of the federal poverty level.
This year’s adjustment follows a roughly 2.6% increase in federal poverty level guidelines, a change implemented to better account for recent inflation.
Support and Benefits
Participants in the WIC program receive monthly food benefits tailored to their household needs. Current benefit allocations provide $26 per month for each qualifying child, $48 for pregnant and postpartum women, and $52 for those who are breastfeeding.
"WIC is here to help women, infants, and children in Alabama improve their overall health by providing nutritious foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support," said Pam Galloway, the state's WIC director, in a recent press release.
