Amtrak train kills woman sitting on tracks in south Alabama
A homeless woman was fatally struck by an Amtrak train in Irvington, the third deadly rail incident in Mobile this year.
A tragic rail accident in Irvington has claimed the life of a woman, marking the third fatal incident involving the rail line in the Mobile area this year. The collision occurred Monday evening when the woman was struck by an Amtrak Mardi Gras train around 6 p.m.
Incident Details and Investigation
According to reports provided to NBC 15 by Mobile police, the victim was sitting on the tracks at the time of the impact. Investigators believe the woman was experiencing homelessness and was potentially accompanied by a dog during the incident.
Officials from the Mobile Police Department have directed inquiries regarding the investigation to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. 205focus.com has attempted to reach both agencies for comment, though efforts have not yet been successful.
Rising Safety Concerns
This latest tragedy has brought renewed scrutiny to the safety of the Gulf Coast rail service, which only began operations earlier this year. Previous incidents this year have already left the local community on edge:
- In February, a collision in Theodore resulted in the deaths of a woman and her 8-year-old daughter.
- In April, a New Orleans-bound train struck a truck near Grand Bay after the vehicle became wedged at a railroad crossing.
