Class 1A baseball: Fayetteville rolls past No. 3 Hubbertville in Game 1

The 1987 state championship trophy remains a proud fixture at Fayetteville High School, but head coach Matt Collier is ready to add a new piece of hardware to the case. After a dominant 14-4 win in six innings on Wednesday, the Wolves are just one victory away from capturing the school's second-ever team sport title.

Wolves Surge Past Hubbertville

Fayetteville (22-18), which finished the regular season unranked, made a massive statement in Oxford by taking a 1-0 series lead over No. 3 Hubbertville in the Class 1A championship series. The Wolves have been focused on a singular goal throughout the postseason, and according to Collier, the mission is now down to its final step.

"We started the postseason breaking it down with how many games we need to win to win it all," Collier said. "We started with 10. It’s crazy to say we are down to 1."

Dynamic Duo Powers the Offense

The offense was led by the stellar performance of Blake McDaniel and Ethan Jones, who combined to go 5-for-7 with 8 RBIs and 3 runs scored. McDaniel, a junior, was nearly perfect at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles and 6 RBIs. "I was seeing the ball very well," McDaniel said. "I just go through a routine, take a break and try to be smooth and stick to our approach."

Jones, a senior, provided the highlight of the day with a mammoth two-run homer to centerfield. He also anchored the team on the mound, throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts while allowing only three hits and two walks. Collier praised the duo's ability to perform under pressure, noting, "They play better when the moments are bigger."

Looking Ahead to Game 2

Fayetteville showed immense resilience after falling into an early 2-0 hole in the first inning. The Wolves responded with a balanced attack, tallying 14 hits throughout the contest and benefiting from five Hubbertville errors. Connor Crumpton also chipped in with a 3-for-5 performance, while Brenton Cantrell added two hits and two runs.

For the Lions, coaches and players look to bounce back in Game 2. Hubbertville previously showed they can rally, having dropped the series opener in last week's semifinals before surging past No. 1 Appalachian. "We are going to flush this one," Lions coach Adam Brand said. "They will come back ready tomorrow."

Game 2 is set for 4 p.m. Thursday at Jim Case Stadium in Jacksonville. If Hubbertville wins, a decisive Game 3 will follow. The series winner will finally add a new championship trophy to their school's history.
