Class 2A baseball: Beau Willis pitches Mars Hill to Game 1 win over Ariton
Beau Willis pitched a complete game and allowed just 3 hits as the Panthers won Game 1 of the Class 2A title series at Oxford's Choccolocco Park.
Beau Willis delivered a masterful performance on the mound Monday, putting Mars Hill Bible just one win away from the Class 2A state baseball championship. The senior dominated with a complete-game shutout, silencing Ariton in a 4-0 victory at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.
A Masterclass on the Mound
Willis commanded the strike zone with 94 pitches, limiting Ariton to just three hits. While the Purple Cats challenged early with back-to-back singles from Wells Ganey and Easton Kilpatrick in the first inning, Willis locked in immediately. From that point forward, he never allowed more than one baserunner in any single frame.
Mars Hill coach Josh Willingham praised his starter's poise and precision. "That’s the performance it’s going to take if you’re going to go out and try to win a state championship," Willingham said. "You’ve got to have that sort of effort on the mound. That formula doesn’t change. We try to do the exact same thing every game. Pound the zone with multiple pitches, make every routine play and make them earn everything they get on offense."
Breaking the Deadlock
The defensive stalemate held firm through four innings until the Panthers finally broke through in the fifth. Taking advantage of two Ariton errors and a pair of walks, Mars Hill manufactured a run without recording a hit. The lead expanded in the sixth when Carter Hamm stepped up with two outs, lacing a 1-2 pitch into right field to drive in two runs, scoring Carsen Wynn and Luke Fowler. Sophomore Cody Willis added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out single.
Hamm, who has navigated a shifting role in the lineup this season, emphasized the importance of staying ready. "They really try to simplify the game for us and let us compete," Hamm said. "You’re not going to get it done every time, but if you keep competing every time good things are going to happen."
Looking Ahead
For Ariton (32-9), Easton Kilpatrick provided the brightest spot at the plate, reaching base in all three of his appearances. Ariton coach Bob Pickett remains confident in his squad's resilience despite the Game 1 setback. "I was proud of Easton Kilpatrick," Pickett noted. "I thought he pitched extremely well today. We probably squandered it a little bit and did some uncharacteristic things on defense. We’ll have to flush it and be ready for tomorrow. These guys are mentally tough, so they’ll be ready to go."
The championship series shifts to Jacksonville State on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. A third game will be played if necessary to decide the title. Keep it locked to 205focus.com for the latest updates on the Class 2A state baseball championship.
