Fairhope football standout commits to South Alabama
Gus Faulkner was 2nd-team all-state pick in 2025
Fairhope defensive star Gus Faulkner has officially pledged his future to South Alabama. The standout talent announced his commitment to the Jaguars for the 2027 recruiting cycle this past Monday.
A Defensive Force
Measuring in at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Faulkner established himself as a dominant presence on the field last season. His efforts in 2025 earned him second-team Class 7A All-State honors, a recognition well-earned after a massive campaign that included 121 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and four pass breakups. He also proved to be a turnover machine, tallying three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and an interception, along with a sack.
According to 247 Sports, Faulkner drew attention from several programs, holding offers from Austin Peay, Nicholls, and North Alabama, with additional interest from Army and Navy. While he currently excels as a safety, he is projected to transition to the linebacker position at the collegiate level.
High Praise from Fairhope
Fairhope head coach Caleb Ross told 205focus.com that the Jaguars are getting a player with an elite trajectory. "He’s a great human being first of all," Ross said. "Obviously, South Alabama is getting a great person. From a football standpoint, his ceiling is really, really high."
Ross highlighted the physical and mental growth still ahead for the recruit. "He’s got a lot of room to grow. He is physical at the point of attack. He runs well, can hit and is very instinctive. He’s also only going to get better. He’s about 205 (pounds) now. In two years, he’ll be 225 and a really good player. Off the field, he is disciplined, good in the classroom, a good leader. You get the complete package with him."
Building the Class of 2027
Faulkner is the third verbal commitment for South Alabama's 2027 class, joining a group that already includes quarterback Christian Segar of Daphne and wide receiver Trevor Jacobs from Tallahassee, Florida. Prospects can officially sign their letters of intent starting on national signing day, Dec. 2.
