Fans crash ticketing sites for ‘The Odyssey’ release
The bottlenecks centered on Imax and other premium large-format screenings for the $250 million production.
If you were among the many moviegoers trying to lock down seats on Thursday, you weren't alone. Ticketing platforms across the country buckled under the weight of massive traffic as fans rushed to grab advance tickets for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film, The Odyssey, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17.
Technical Glitches and High Demand
The digital gridlock was immediate and widespread. AMC’s ticketing app was forced to pause service as wait times surged to over an hour, while the Fandango website also experienced significant delays. These bottlenecks were primarily driven by intense interest in Imax and other premium large-format screenings for the $250 million production.
A Star-Studded Epic
Universal is backing this massive adaptation of Homer’s classic epic poem, which features a powerhouse cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. True to his signature style, Nolan shot the film using proprietary Imax cameras, maintaining his dedicated commitment to providing the ultimate large-format cinematic experience.
This isn't the first time a Nolan release has caused a digital frenzy. The scramble mirrors the excitement surrounding his previous film, Oppenheimer, which saw fans traveling across state lines just to secure a seat for 70mm Imax presentations.
Bringing the Audience Inside
Nolan’s focus remains squarely on viewer immersion. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, the director explained his creative process: "When I’m writing, I’m visualizing the film as an audience member, as somebody experiencing the story. Then, when I direct the story, I’m trying to take the audience there. So, in the case of The Odyssey, I’m trying to put the audience into that horse. I’m trying to put them on the deck of Odysseus’s ship."
What's Next
While AMC—the world’s largest exhibition chain and home to the most Imax screens in the U.S.—has navigated similar technical hurdles during major releases like 2023’s Eras Tour and the 2025 Showgirl films, the demand for The Odyssey confirms it is shaping up to be a massive summer event, as reported by Variety. As of now, AMC has declined to comment on the disruptions, and representatives for Universal and Fandango have yet to respond to requests for comment.
