Google investing $1.5 billion to expand data center campus in north Alabama

Google is doubling down on North Alabama. The tech giant announced a massive $1.5 billion investment this past Monday to expand its data center campus in Jackson County, pairing the infrastructure growth with new initiatives aimed at community education and regional energy affordability.

A Long-Term Alabama Partnership

Since establishing a footprint in Jackson County in 2018, Google has focused on becoming an integral part of the local landscape. According to the company, this latest expansion reinforces its commitment to supporting regional jobs and upgrading local infrastructure while maintaining a focus on energy efficiency. Thomas Gamble, the Jackson County Google Site Lead, emphasized that the investment is built on a long-term vision of shared success, aiming to create a foundation of opportunity that extends far beyond the final day of construction.

State Senate Majority Leader Steve Livingston praised the move, noting that Google's dedication to the region—ranging from STEM funding to energy programs—serves as a vital foundation for local prosperity.

Powering the Future Responsibly

Google is doubling down on its Ratepayer Protection Pledge, committing to cover 100% of the power it consumes. For this expansion, the company will also bear the direct infrastructure costs associated with its operations. The site, which originally opened in 2019 at the location of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s retired Widows Creek coal plant, continues to benefit from repurposed infrastructure that enhances grid reliability.

The company has already contracted for over 300 MW of new generation capacity in the Tennessee Valley. This builds on a historic 2025 partnership with Kairos Power and the TVA to bring advanced nuclear power to the region. Furthermore, Google operates as a flexible partner to the TVA, adjusting its demand to help stabilize the grid during extreme weather.

Investing in the Community

Beyond the servers, Google is launching a $2 million Energy Impact Fund in partnership with the Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama (CAANEAL) and the TVA. This fund is designed to lower monthly utility bills for local families through weatherization and energy efficiency improvements.

Education also remains a priority. Google announced a $550,000 donation to provide STEM kits for grades 4-8 across the Jackson County School District. This bolsters existing programs like robotics events, the Kevin Dukes Career & Innovation Academy, and the YouScience aptitude program. Jackson County Schools Superintendent Jason Davidson noted that these collaborations provide a direct, high-tech path for graduates to pursue careers right here in Alabama.

Economic Impact

The expansion is set to drive significant local activity, with more than 1,000 contract workers expected to cycle through the site during construction. Google plans to prioritize local businesses for facility maintenance, landscaping, and food services. Previously, the company has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to restore the Paint Rock River Watershed, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship alongside economic growth.
