Hail of gunfire at Birmingham home leaves 1 dead, 6 wounded

A violent tragedy struck a west Birmingham neighborhood Thursday night, as a hail of gunfire erupted at a home gathering, leaving one person dead and six others hospitalized.

Police Response and Investigation

Birmingham police and fire rescue crews were dispatched to the 150 block of Holley Avenue just after 8:30 p.m. following reports of shots fired into a residence. Police spokesman Officer De’Rell Freeman confirmed that at least 30 rounds were discharged during the attack.

Authorities have established a massive perimeter, spanning roughly three blocks in every direction, as detectives and department leaders processed the scene. Jefferson County’s Star 1 helicopter provided aerial support throughout the night. While investigators have taken multiple witnesses into custody for questioning, a clear motive for the shooting remains unknown.

"We won’t sleep until we find out who has done this, who has caused this tragedy in this community," Freeman stated. He emphasized that the location is generally considered peaceful, adding, "What we have been told by community members is that location rarely has any incidents. So, this is shocking to us that something of that nature occurred there."

Victims and Local Context

The seven victims—six men and one woman—were transported by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital and Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Tragically, one man was pronounced dead upon arrival at UAB. Officials report that at least one other victim is currently in critical condition, while three others sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening. The status of the remaining two victims remains subject to conflicting reports.

This incident follows a shooting just one week prior, when three people, including a 15-year-old boy and a woman, were injured by gunfire in the 3200 block of Aspen Avenue Southwest. Five teenagers are currently facing charges in connection to that case.

These outbursts of violence interrupt a significant downward trend in city crime. Prior to this week, Birmingham police reported that the city had seen only 17 homicides in 2026—a 50% decrease compared to 2025 and a 73% drop from 2024. The victim from Thursday's incident marks the 18th homicide in Birmingham for the year.
