Kyle Busch was sick for ‘weeks’ before his death, death certificate reveals
The NASCAR driver died on May 21.
New details surrounding the tragic passing of NASCAR star Kyle Busch have emerged. A death certificate reveals that the 41-year-old had been battling bacterial pneumonia for days to weeks prior to his death on May 21.
The Medical Sequence
According to Us Weekly, citing the death certificate, the pneumonia progressed into sepsis, which was officially deemed the cause of death. Medical examiners determined the sepsis had been present for approximately one day. This condition triggered disseminated intravascular coagulation, causing small clots to form in the bloodstream and restrict vital organ blood flow, ultimately leading to fatal hemorrhagic shock.
A Sudden Loss
Busch died on Thursday, May 21 at age 41, just one day after being found unresponsive in a racing simulator in North Carolina.
A harrowing 911 call released following the incident painted a grim picture of the driver’s final hours, with the caller reporting that Busch was coughing up blood and experiencing severe shortness of breath. The caller described Busch as feeling "very hot" and concerned that he was going to pass out.
NASCAR confirmed the news of Busch's death on May 21, occurring only hours after his family announced he would miss the upcoming Coca-Cola 600 due to a severe illness.
In a statement released via X, NASCAR honored the legacy of the two-time Cup champion: “We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport’s greatest and fiercest drivers. We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.”
