Legendary singer slams unauthorized biopic: ‘Parties involved have been officially notified’
The singer doesn't support the project in anyway.
The Piano Man is hitting a sour note regarding a new film project. Representatives for Billy Joel have confirmed that the music icon does not support the unauthorized biopic titled Billy & Me, which chronicles the early days of his legendary career.
A Project Without Permission
The film, which focuses on the period leading up to Joel’s 1973 breakout album Piano Man, is told through the eyes of his first manager, Irwin Mazur. However, the production faces significant hurdles regarding its legitimacy.
In a recent statement provided to Variety, Joel’s team made it clear that those behind the project have been aware of their standing for years. Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess the necessary life rights, nor can they secure the essential music rights required to bring the story to the screen. Joel's representatives characterized any move to proceed as both professionally and legally misguided.
Differing Perspectives
Despite the pushback, some figures associated with Joel's past are pushing forward with the narrative. Jon Small, who played drums in Joel’s pre-fame band, is involved with the production and stands by the authenticity of the script.
Speaking with Variety, Small described the film as a heartfelt and honest portrayal of the singer's rise to stardom. According to Small, the project is shaped by those who were there during the beginning, aiming to capture the friendships, humor, and creative spark that defined those early years at 205focus.com.
