Madison City Schools names interim Superintendent

Madison City Schools has tapped a familiar leader to guide the system during a period of significant growth. On June 16, the Board of Education unanimously confirmed Eric Terrell as the interim superintendent.

A Seasoned Education Leader

Terrell brings more than two decades of experience to the role, including a nine-year tenure as Assistant Superintendent. His history with the district dates back to 2004, when he began his career as a special education teacher at Discovery Middle School. Over the years, he has served as a teacher and coach at Liberty Middle School and Bob Jones High School, helped launch James Clemons High School in 2012, and returned to lead Discovery Middle School as principal in 2015.

This is not Terrell's first time at the helm; he previously served as interim superintendent from February to June 2020, during which he navigated the district through the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While policy previously prohibited interim leaders from seeking the permanent position, that rule has been lifted, making Terrell eligible to apply this year.

Transitioning Leadership

Terrell steps into the role as current superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols prepares for his retirement, which was announced on April 9. Nichols, who led the district through six years of major expansion, including the opening of three new schools and rising enrollment, expressed confidence in his successor. During a recent meeting, Chief School Financial Officer Laverne Williams praised Nichols for the system's current stability, noting strong reserves and salary increases achieved during his tenure.

“I’m not sure how long the interim term will last, but we just have to make sure everything is getting ready like it’s supposed to get ready for the new school year,” Terrell said. His immediate priorities include the upcoming opening of Russell Branch Elementary and ensuring a seamless start to the academic calendar.

The Path Forward

Terrell is set to begin his duties on July 1, which coincides with the deadline for applications for the permanent superintendent position. Legal counsel Woody Sanderson confirmed that the district has already received multiple resumes and aims to appoint a permanent replacement by the end of July.
