Major delays expected as US-280 at Pump House Road is set to close for bridge work
US-280 at Pump House Road will close nightly June 5-8 for the widening project, with major detours and delays expected.
Motorists navigating the Birmingham area should prepare for significant disruptions as the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) prepares for the final full closure of US-280 at Pump House Road to facilitate essential bridge work.
Closure Details and Timing
Starting Friday, June 5 at 11 p.m., crews will shut down US-280 in both directions at the Pump House Road intersection. This operation is weather-dependent and marks a critical milestone in the ongoing effort to widen US-280 to four lanes in each direction between Lakeshore Parkway and I-459. This stretch of highway typically accommodates over 100,000 drivers daily.
The work involves lifting the final two bridge girders, which will expand the new bridge to accommodate a center turn lane and a pedestrian sidewalk. Westbound lanes are expected to remain closed through Monday morning, June 8. Eastbound lanes will see a nightly closure pattern, reopening at 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday before shutting down again at 11 p.m. both nights.
Traffic Management and Detours
During the eastbound closures, the Pump House Road off-ramp will be inaccessible. Additionally, Pump House Road itself will be closed nightly to allow cranes to maneuver the girders safely over the highway. Drivers will be directed to use Green Valley Road as an alternative route.
For those traveling through the area, ALDOT recommends the following primary detour:
- Westbound: Use I-459 to I-65 to Lakeshore Parkway before reconnecting to US-280.
- Eastbound: Follow the reverse of the westbound route.
ALDOT anticipates all US-280 lanes will be reopened by 6 a.m. on Monday, June 8. This construction initiative is part of a broader expansion effort that began in Spring 2025 and is projected to significantly increase capacity upon its completion in early October.
