Two waves of storms possible today in parts of Alabama
Tornadoes and hail are not expected, but there could be some strong wind gusts and heavy rain.
If you are heading out in northern Alabama this Friday, keep a close eye on the sky. According to the National Weather Service, residents should prepare for a potential double-header of storms as we head into the weekend.
A Two-Wave Storm System
Meteorologists are tracking two distinct waves of activity for northern Alabama today. The first round could develop later this morning and persist into the early afternoon, while a secondary wave is expected to roll through later in the afternoon and linger into the evening hours.
While forecasters at the National Weather Service note that tornadoes and hail are not currently in the cards, these storms carry a punch. Expect heavy rainfall and wind gusts that could reach up to 60 mph.
Severe Weather Outlook
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has placed northern Alabama—including the Huntsville area—under a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk. This categorization indicates that while storms remain isolated, they could turn severe quickly.
Outside of northern Alabama, the rest of the state is clear of severe weather risks, though conditions will remain brutal. The heat and humidity are not going anywhere, with air temperatures peaking in the low to mid-90s today. With the high humidity, many areas across the state will experience 'feels like' temperatures topping 100 degrees this afternoon.
Looking Ahead
The muggy, hot pattern is set to continue through Saturday and Sunday. However, the weather service notes that rain chances will begin to climb as we move from Sunday through Tuesday. The good news for those looking for a break from organized severe weather is that the forecast remains clear of such systems as we head into next week.
