The heartwarming moment an Air Force dad flew across the world to surprise his son at graduation
Branden Jackson received more than a diploma when his father, stationed in Japan for three years, appeared on stage during his graduation.
Branden Jackson stepped onto the stage at the Birmingham CrossPlex expecting a standard graduation ceremony at Huffman High School. Instead, he received a life-changing surprise that reached all the way from the Pacific.
A Surprise from Across the Globe
Branden's father, Air Force Master Sgt. Tobias Jackson, had been stationed in Japan for the past three years. While Branden believed his father would be unable to attend, Tobias had been working tirelessly to coordinate a surprise homecoming for the major milestone.
"It’s been very hard to keep it under wraps," Tobias Jackson shared prior to the ceremony. "He’s grown into such a great young man, and he understands the significance of what we do and how we do it. It took a lot of planning, but I definitely was not going to miss this. I knew this was a very large milestone, more than what people think."
A Milestone to Remember
The emotional reunion was especially meaningful, as Branden intends to follow his father's lead and enlist in the Air Force. The graduate, who spoke with Jaylen Holloway of Birmingham City Schools Media, noted, "It was a very surprising moment."
The celebration didn't end with the surprise appearance on stage. Shortly after the ceremony, Branden discovered he had been gifted a new car, just days after obtaining his driver’s license. An ecstatic Branden exclaimed, "I like this, I like this!"
Reflecting on the whirlwind day, Branden emphasized that the presence of his father was the true highlight. "This graduation present is bigger than the car. He didn’t have to watch it online because he watched it in real life," Branden said. "I’m thankful."
