Massive recall involves 419,000 vehicles with seat belts that may not work when you need them most
The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission posted the recall notice for 2018-2022 models where seat belt retractors can lock and fail to secure occupants properly during crashes.
Ford Motor Company is issuing a massive recall involving more than 419,000 vehicles due to a critical seat belt safety concern. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has confirmed the recall, which targets specific issues with seat belt retractors that could compromise occupant safety during a collision.
Affected Vehicles and Safety Risks
The recall affects 2018-2022 Lincoln Navigator and Expedition models. In these vehicles, the seat belt retractor may fail to extend or retract properly, preventing the belt from securely fastening the driver or front passenger. While the seat belt lock function remains operational, the malfunction in the retractor increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Engineers have traced the fault to the seat belt retractor pretensioner. High-heat environments can lead to the oxidation of internal components, which may trigger the pretensioner to deploy inadvertently. As a warning sign, drivers might notice the airbag malfunction light illuminating on their dashboard. According to reports provided by Ford, the company has received notification of at least one injury linked to this defect.
Next Steps for Owners
Ford will begin notifying affected owners by mail no later than September 4, 2026. Once you receive your notice, you are advised to bring your vehicle to a local Ford or Lincoln dealership, where technicians will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front seat belt retractors at no cost.
