New trial date set for Huntsville police officer charged with 3 counts of capital murder
Courtney Spraggins was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
A new trial date has been established for the former Huntsville police officer facing three counts of capital murder.
Trial Delayed Until 2027
The trial of David McCoy, which was originally scheduled to commence in April 2026, has been pushed back by a year. Following a status hearing on Thursday, the court set a new start date of April 5, 2027. This case has faced multiple delays throughout the legal process.
Background of the Case
Prosecutors are actively seeking the death penalty against McCoy. He is accused of the January 7, 2022, shooting death of 26-year-old Courtney Spraggins, who was seven months pregnant with his child at the time. Spraggins was found dead in her vehicle outside the Weston Ranch Apartment Complex.
At the time of the incident, McCoy was off-duty and living with another woman. He claimed to investigators that he did not know the victim and suggested she died by suicide while he was on a 911 call.
Key Evidence
Investigators paint a different picture, reporting that they discovered photos of McCoy inside the victim's car. Conversely, the victim's phone was located inside McCoy’s apartment, and ultrasound images were discovered in his patrol vehicle.
The charges filed against McCoy reflect the gravity of the incident, including counts for the murder of a person inside a vehicle and the killing of a person younger than 14, pertaining to the unborn child.
