NFL team waives former Alabama wide receiver

The Washington Commanders have parted ways with wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks, waiving the former Alabama standout on Tuesday to clear a roster spot for veteran tight end Anthony Firkser.

A Quick Look at the Move

Brooks, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Louisville, had been looking to solidify his place in Washington. He initially impressed during the preseason, leading the team with 10 receptions for 90 yards. Although he didn't make the final cut before the regular season, the Commanders opted to bring him back via the practice squad.

During the 2025 campaign, Brooks made one appearance, logging seven offensive snaps in a narrow 25-24 defeat against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 13. He ultimately spent the remainder of the season on injured reserve with an undisclosed ailment. Despite participating in the team's offseason program, he was released with an injury designation on Monday.

Background and Legacy

Before his transition to the professional ranks, Brooks built a strong collegiate resume. He spent three productive seasons at Alabama, where he tallied 57 receptions for 896 yards and 10 touchdowns. Following his time in Tuscaloosa, he moved to Louisville for the 2024 season, hauling in 61 catches for 1,013 yards and nine scores.

The man replacing him on the roster, Anthony Firkser, brings eight years of league experience to Washington, having appeared in seven games for the Detroit Lions last season.
