Oysters are the star at this new old favorite in Orange Beach
The venue is new, but the owners are familiar.
Orange Beach has a fresh face on the scene with the arrival of Driftwood Oyster Bar. While the establishment is new, it quickly captured the laid-back, local vibe that defined the corner of 23479 Perdido Beach Boulevard for years.
A Familiar Space Finds New Life
The building formerly housed The Flying Harpoon 2, a staple of the local nightlife scene. The venue closed in October 2025 as the previous owners transitioned to a new project in Port St. Joe, Florida. Following that closure, restaurateurs Garrett Spence and Michelle Deerman stepped in to launch Driftwood Oyster Bar. The pair already shares a strong track record in the area, having operated Duck’s Diner in Orange Beach since 2014 and successfully expanding the concept to Gulf Shores in 2024.
Spence acknowledged that while his breakfast-and-lunch cafes are thriving, he wanted to pivot to something different for this location. After some renovations—including moving the kitchen indoors and adding an interior staircase—the much-anticipated project officially opened its doors for Memorial Day weekend.
Oysters and Atmosphere
The reception has been strong, with Spence noting that they even sold out of product during their opening weekend. Driftwood offers a focused menu highlighted by its namesake, with raw oysters priced at $19.60 per dozen. For those looking for baked or grilled options, a half-dozen will set you back $16.50, while a full dozen costs $26.85.
Beyond the raw bar, the menu leans into coastal favorites. Patrons can find Creole Gator Bites ($14.45), various po’boys and seafood tacos ($16.50), and seafood platters served with sides, slaw, and hushpuppies ($22.65). Fans of the Duck’s Diner burger can also find a familiar staple on the menu for $15.45.
Refining the Experience
Spence is intentional about the menu, opting to source high-quality oysters from North Gulf Farms rather than offering an oyster po'boy that would require compromising on freshness. The atmosphere is rounded out by a selection of signature cocktails, including the $9.30 Driftwood Bushwacker and the $10.35 Black Walnut Old-Fashioned.
As a late-night destination, the bar aims to fill a specific gap in the market, remaining open until midnight. Whether you are grabbing a seat at the upstairs bar or utilizing the overflow seating downstairs, Driftwood is settling in as a go-to spot for seafood and nightlife in Orange Beach.
