Prominent Mobile gay bar abruptly shuts down at height of Pride Month activities
The venue says it is working to clear up "concerns" about the transfer of its liquor license after a change in ownership.
Downtown Mobile staple B-Bob’s has abruptly shuttered its doors through the remainder of Pride Month, citing complications with its liquor license. The unexpected closure forces the cancellation of a full weekend of events that were set to highlight the venue's celebration of Pride.
Licensing Hurdles Prompt Voluntary Suspension
According to a statement released Friday, the venue halted operations after questions emerged regarding the status of its liquor license following a change in ownership. While reviewing licensing processes with the City of Mobile ahead of a planned street party, management discovered that the license did not automatically transfer with the recent sale of the property. In coordination with the Alabama ABC Board, the bar opted for a voluntary closure to resolve these regulatory matters.
Owner Matthew Bees, who purchased the institution earlier this year from longtime owner Jerry Ehlen, expressed his devastation regarding the timing of the shutdown. "My commitment to this community is unwavering," Bees said in the statement. "We are working as hard and as fast as we can to make things right." The bar confirmed that employees will be paid throughout the closure period.
Events Canceled and Rescheduled
The closure directly impacted several highly anticipated events, including a drag show scheduled for Friday evening following the city’s Pride Month artwalk. Additionally, a block party slated for Saturday has been pulled, though the planned voter registration drive has been moved to Great Day Latte at 10 S. Conception St.
While the bar sits dark at 213 Conti St., the closure will serve a dual purpose. Beyond addressing the licensing status, management plans to use this time to perform necessary infrastructure repairs, specifically targeting aging cast iron sewage pipes.
Looking Ahead
There is currently no official timeline for when the venue will welcome patrons back. The team says they are working closely with local officials and the Alabama ABC Board to ensure full compliance moving forward. For the latest updates, fans can visit the official Facebook page or www.b-bobs.com.
