Ranking Auburn football’s 2026 opponents from easiest to hardest

As Auburn enters the inaugural season of the Alex Golesh era, the Tigers are on a mission to secure their first winning campaign since 2020. Success won't come easy, as the program navigates a challenging nine-game SEC schedule with a heavily rebuilt roster. Here at 205focus.com, we are breaking down the 2026 slate by ranking the Tigers' opponents from the most manageable matchups to the toughest tests on the calendar.

12. Samford

The Bulldogs are the lone FCS opponent on the schedule, making them the clear choice for the easiest matchup. Coming off a 1-11 season in 2025, Samford visits the Plains on Nov. 21. This game serves as a critical late-season tune-up before Auburn heads into the Iron Bowl.

11. Southern Miss

As the only other non-Power Four program on the list, Southern Miss shouldn't pose a massive threat. The Golden Eagles struggled in ESPN’s initial SP+ rankings, landing at 131st out of 138 teams.

10. Baylor

Auburn opens the season against the Bears in Atlanta on Sept. 5. While season openers carry their own pressure, Baylor is in a rebuilding phase after losing starting quarterback Sawyer Robertson and running back Bryson Washington—who notably transferred to Auburn. The Tigers won in Waco last year and will look to repeat that success on a neutral site.

9. Arkansas

The Razorbacks enter 2026 with a new look after hiring former Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield. Though they brought in a massive 42-player transfer class, it ranked just 13th in the SEC. This Nov. 7 home game comes after a brutal three-game stretch, but Auburn should be the favorite at Jordan-Hare.

8. Mississippi State

The Bulldogs are entering Year 3 under Jeff Lebby, who holds a 7-18 record through two seasons. While they showed signs of improvement last year, the roster still lacks the elite talent found at the top of the conference. Playing in Starkville makes this a tougher task than the Arkansas game, keeping it in the bottom half of the SEC rankings.

7. Vanderbilt

Don't sleep on the Commodores. Even with the departure of stars like Diego Pavia and Eli Stowers, Vanderbilt sits at No. 31 in the SP+ rankings, just five spots behind Auburn. Their offense remains dangerous, ranking 15th nationally, and the Tigers are looking for their first win over Vandy since 2023.

6. Florida

The SEC opener features a battle of first-year head coaches who both previously found success in the American Conference. With the game being held on the Plains, Auburn might have the narrowest of advantages in what currently looks like a toss-up.

5. Ole Miss

The Rebels are transitioning after Lane Kiffin’s departure for LSU, with Pete Golding taking the helm. However, they retained significant talent in Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy. A trip to Oxford immediately following matchups with Georgia and LSU makes this a high-difficulty encounter.

4. Tennessee

This Oct. road trip to Neyland Stadium represents a homecoming for Alex Golesh, formerly the Vols' offensive coordinator. Despite a change at quarterback, Tennessee boasts the nation's fourth-ranked offense according to SP+ metrics. It will likely be the first game where the Tigers are clear underdogs.

3. LSU

The hype around Baton Rouge is real after LSU reportedly spent $40 million to build its 2026 roster. With the top-ranked transfer class featuring Sam Leavitt and Jordan Seaton, LSU will be one of the most talented teams Auburn faces. While a home-field advantage helps, Auburn will need to be at its best to pull the upset.

2. Alabama

Traveling to Tuscaloosa is never easy, especially considering the Tigers haven't won there since 2010. Golesh is already emphasizing the importance of the Iron Bowl, but facing the No. 11 ranked team in SP+ on the road remains one of the most daunting tasks in college football.

1. Georgia

Until proven otherwise, Georgia remains the gold standard. The Tigers travel to Athens, a venue where they haven't tasted victory in 21 years. Coming off an SEC title and a playoff berth, the Bulldogs boast a top-five roster that will likely make them a heavy favorite in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.
