Robertson, Mitchell will face off in Alabama runoff after bitter AG race
The Republican nominee will face Democrat Jeff McLaughlin in the general election in November.
The race for Alabama attorney general is heating up, as Katherine Robertson and Jay Mitchell prepare for a high-stakes runoff. After a competitive primary, these two Republicans are moving to the next round of a particularly intense campaign cycle to replace outgoing Attorney General Steve Marshall, who is vacating the post to pursue a run for the U.S. Senate.
The Primary Results
Robertson, currently serving as chief counsel for Attorney General Marshall, secured the top spot in Tuesday’s primary voting. Mitchell, who stepped down from his position on the Alabama Supreme Court to launch this bid, followed closely in second place. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey finished third, finishing her campaign with $201,000 raised after highlighting her long-standing prosecutorial experience in Blount County.
A Bitter Path to the Runoff
While both candidates campaigned as pro-Trump, law-and-order conservatives, their approach to the campaign became increasingly aggressive. Mitchell took aim at Robertson’s reliance on large, undisclosed contributions from out-of-state nonprofits. He also challenged the current AG's office over a 2019 prosecution of a former Montgomery police officer, an accusation Marshall dismissed as misleading campaign fodder.
Robertson retaliated with heavy critiques of her own, calling Mitchell a “weak fraud” and claiming he lobbied for a Muslim country. Mitchell pushed back against these claims as “bald-faced lies.” The financial scale of the contest reflected the intensity of the matchup, with Robertson spending $4.4 million and Mitchell spending $3.9 million.
Looking Ahead
Voters will head back to the polls for the runoff on June 16. The eventual Republican nominee is set to face Democrat Jeff McLaughlin, a Guntersville lawyer and former state legislator, in the general election on November 3.
