South Alabama softball season ends with extra-inning loss in Baton Rouge Regional
Jaguars fall 1-0 to Akron in 8 innings
The South Alabama softball team saw its 2026 campaign come to a heartbreaking conclusion on Saturday in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. The Jaguars dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Akron in eight innings, officially ending their season.
A Defensive Duel
It was a masterclass in pitching for most of the contest, as the third-seeded Jaguars (32-27) and the fourth-seeded Zips (35-24) remained locked in a scoreless stalemate through seven innings. The deadlock was finally broken in the top of the eighth when Akron's Delaney Jenkinson launched a solo home run over the left-field wall. South Alabama left fielder Brooklynn Bockhaus nearly pulled back the go-ahead blast with a valiant leaping effort, but the ball just cleared her reach.
South Alabama made one last stand in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs. However, the rally stalled when Ansleigh Smith grounded out to third, ending the game and the Jaguars' season.
Highlighting the Effort
South Alabama starter Sydney Scapin was dominant early, recording eight strikeouts and allowing only one hit over five innings of work. Ryley Harrison (18-13) took over in relief, surrendering two hits over three innings before giving up the deciding home run. For Akron, Madie Jamrog (18-7) went the distance, throwing 135 pitches to stifle the Jaguar offense.
The Jaguars had their chances, notably when Bockhaus drilled a deep drive that landed just inches foul of the left-field pole in the seventh inning. Smith paced the offense with three of the team's seven hits, while Lillie Stagner added two.
Building for the Future
Despite the early exit in Baton Rouge—which included a 6-0 loss to Virginia Tech on Friday—head coach Becky Clark expressed pride in the grit and professionalism her squad displayed throughout the year.
"I’m very proud of our student-athletes and the way they’ve represented the University of South Alabama this year," Clark said. "Not the way we wanted it to end, obviously, but the conference championship I just told them is something no one can ever take away from them. I think this gives us something to build on next year with a lot of young players on the field."
The 2026 season remains a historic one for the program, as the Jaguars won the Sun Belt Conference tournament for the first time in 11 years. Akron, having secured the first postseason win in their program's history, moves on to continue play in the regional bracket.
