Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers says he plans to retire after 2026 season: ‘This is it’
The 42-year-old quarterback just signed a one-year deal with the Steelers.
The Aaron Rodgers era in Pittsburgh has an official expiration date. The 42-year-old quarterback confirmed on Wednesday that the upcoming NFL campaign will be the final chapter of his storied career.
The Final Chapter
When asked directly if this season would mark his retirement, the four-time NFL MVP was unequivocal, telling reporters via ESPN, "Yes. This is it."
Rodgers recently solidified his immediate future by signing a one-year deal with the Steelers worth up to $25 million. This contract brings him back to the organization he led to an AFC North title last winter and reunites him with Mike McCarthy, his head coach for 13 seasons during their tenure with the Green Bay Packers.
Back on the Field
Fans got a glimpse of the veteran signal-caller on Monday when he made a surprise appearance at the Steelers' voluntary organized team activities. Clad in a white No. 8 jersey, Rodgers hit the practice field shortly after closing the deal that ended months of speculation regarding his status.
While the Steelers maintained optimism throughout the offseason that a decision would be reached prior to free agency, the timeline remained fluid until this week's announcement.
The Quarterback Room
As Rodgers prepares for his final season, he finds himself in a crowded quarterback depth chart. The Steelers bolstered the position in the draft, selecting Penn State standout Drew Allar in the third round. Allar joins veteran Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, who was a sixth-round pick in 2025.
