Texas Tech QB granted injunction by Lubbock judge, eligible to play immediately

The college football trajectory for Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has taken a sudden, dramatic turn. A Lubbock County judge has intervened, granting a temporary injunction that effectively rescues Sorsby's season.

Sorsby, who had previously been ruled ineligible by the NCAA due to his involvement in sports betting, is now eligible to play immediately.

The Court's Stance

District Court Judge Ken Curry delivered a clear mandate, ruling that the NCAA is prohibited from blocking Sorsby from practicing, participating, or playing for the Red Raiders throughout the 2026 season. In his decision, Judge Curry emphasized that preventing Sorsby from taking the field would result in a "probable, imminent, and irreparable injury."

Under the terms of an agreed-upon punishment, Sorsby is expected to sit out the first two games of the 2026 season if the ruling holds. The quarterback joined Texas Tech this offseason after a stint at Cincinnati during the 2024–25 campaign.

NCAA Pushback

The NCAA responded to the development on Monday with sharp criticism, claiming that the judicial override "undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports." The governing body noted its commitment to student-athlete mental health while asserting the necessity of defending competitive integrity against athletes betting on their own sport.

A Complex Case

Investigations revealed that Sorsby placed thousands of bets totaling over $30,000 across his time at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech. His legal counsel has disclosed that Sorsby was recently diagnosed with both anxiety and gambling disorders following a 35-day stay at an inpatient rehabilitation center in Arizona. His attorneys are pushing for these violations to be viewed through the lens of a mental health condition.
