The new Alabama player whom Kalen DeBoer called ‘really steady’

The Alabama football kicking unit is undergoing a significant transformation. While Conor Talty returns to the roster, the Crimson Tide coaching staff is ensuring the position remains an open, high-stakes battle by bringing in legitimate competition this offseason.

Meet Lorcan Quinn

The newcomer turning heads is Lorcan Quinn. Hailing from Donaghmore, Ireland, Quinn transferred to Alabama following a stint at Marshall. His arrival has sparked Alabama brought in competition that coach Kalen DeBoer is paying close attention to.

A Consistent Leg

During the SEC spring meetings in Miramar Beach, Florida, DeBoer spoke highly of Quinn's poise and power. "Just consistent," DeBoer said. "He’s got a big leg on him. I’m not going to be worried about the length of the kick, the distance."

Quinn's track record supports that confidence. Last season, he was a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals between 40 and 49 yards and converted 4 of 6 attempts from beyond 50 yards, including a career-long 55-yarder.

Beyond the Distance

DeBoer emphasized that it is Quinn’s maturity that sets him apart. "What you always want with the specialists, if it’s not perfect, how does it affect them?" DeBoer noted. "He’s just really steady. I appreciate about him, he’s a little older and a little more mature that way. I think that carries into his kicking."

The Battle for the Job

Quinn remains locked in a direct competition with Talty, who handled both kickoff and field goal duties for the Tide in 2025. Talty finished the previous campaign 16-of-23 on field goals, including a 7-of-10 mark from 40-49 yards.

With both players vying for control, 205focus.com notes that a split-duty scenario remains on the table. Alabama has utilized such an approach before, most notably two seasons ago when the team paired Talty on kickoffs with another specialist tasked specifically with field goals and extra points.
