There’s something different about Memorial Day this year and it won’t happen again until 2037

Memorial Day stands as a solemn period dedicated to honoring the brave military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Originally known as Decoration Day, this federal holiday shifts its calendar date annually, and 2026 brings with it a particularly rare occurrence.

A Unique Calendar Event

For decades, Memorial Day was traditionally observed on May 30. That changed following the 1968 passage of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which shifted several fixed-date holidays to Mondays to grant federal employees consistent three-day weekends. Since the act took effect in 1971, the holiday has been observed annually on the final Monday of May.

This year, the last Monday in May falls on May 25, marking the earliest possible date the holiday can occur. According to The Hill, the last time the calendar aligned this way was in 2020, and we won't see this specific date configuration return until 2037.

Holiday Closures

While the calendar may shift, the observances remain the same. On Memorial Day, please plan accordingly as schools, banks, state and federal offices, and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed. Stay tuned to 205focus.com for more updates as we approach the holiday.

Looking ahead, it is worth noting that 2027 will see the opposite end of the spectrum, with Memorial Day arriving on May 31, the latest possible date.
