Will the offensive line be a position of emphasis in recruiting under Alex Golesh?
Auburn made a statement when it added to its 2027 recruiting class earlier this week
For nearly a decade, Auburn football has faced a persistent hurdle in its recruiting efforts: securing elite high school offensive line talent. Despite celebrating three top-10 recruiting classes over the past nine cycles, the Tigers have historically prioritized defensive linemen, wide receivers, and linebackers over the big men up front. That drought of top-100 offensive line recruits appears to be reaching an inflection point under new leadership.
A New Focus in the Trenches
Alex Golesh’s arrival has signaled a shift in strategy. Earlier this week, the Tigers landed a major pledge from four-star offensive tackle Layton Von Brandt. Ranked as the No. 64 overall player in the 247Sports composite, Von Brandt represents the caliber of talent Auburn has lacked on its offensive front since the 2017 signing of Calvin Ashley and Nick Brahms.
Securing Von Brandt—especially by beating out heavyweights like Notre Dame and Penn State—serves as a loud statement of intent for the current staff.
Building a Physical Identity
Golesh has been clear about his philosophy: he wants to "run the piss out of the ball." That commitment is reflected in the recruiting trail, with both Von Brandt and standout running back Myson Johnson-Cook serving as the class cornerstones. As the only two top-100 commitments for Auburn so far, these players underscore exactly what Golesh and his staff prioritize for the future of the offense.
This emphasis is born of necessity. Since 2020, Auburn has struggled significantly in pass protection, failing to crack the top 36 nationally in fewest sacks allowed and bottoming out at 129th last season. These protection issues played a major role in the offensive struggles that defined the previous regime.
Sustainability in the SEC
While the high-tempo scheme implemented by Golesh and offensive coordinator Joel Gordon aims to ease the burden on pass protection, SEC success remains tethered to the quality of the offensive line. Whether through the transfer portal or the high school ranks, Golesh’s moves this summer suggest he understands that a powerhouse offense cannot survive without a reinforced foundation. The tide may finally be turning in the trenches for the Tigers.
