With school just three weeks away, nearly 10,000 Birmingham students remain unregistered
Birmingham City Schools officials say timely registration is critical to finalizing staffing, schedules and classroom resources before students return August 10.
With the first day of the 2026-27 school year set for Monday, August 10, time is running out for Birmingham families to prepare. Birmingham City Schools is issuing a call to action for parents, as nearly 10,000 students remain unregistered with only three weeks left before the bell rings.
Registration Urgency
Despite the online portal opening back in April, only 45% of students in the district have completed the process. Superintendent Mark Sullivan is stressing the importance of immediate action, noting that registration is vital for the district to finalize staffing, classroom assignments, student schedules, and transportation.
"Every family that has not completed registration should make it a priority," Sullivan said. "Families should not wait. Timely registration helps schools finalize staffing, classroom assignments, student schedules, transportation, and other essential services before students return."
By the Numbers
The district served 18,385 students during the 2025-26 school year, according to the official district website. Following a trend of recent years, the district has been focused on increasing enrollment, which saw a 0.5% boost in 2024—the first rise in nearly 30 years. Efforts to encourage participation have varied in the past, including a 2025 initiative where the city received a $43,000 grant to provide $500 cash incentives for families whose children were registered and present on the first day of class.
How to Register
Birmingham City Schools is actively reaching out to families to close the gap, offering multiple ways to ensure every student is prepared for day one. Parents can complete the process via the district website or visit their child's zoned school for in-person assistance. Staff members are available on-site to help navigate the registration requirements.
"Whether you register online, visit your zoned school, or call the technical support line for assistance, you are doing your part to ensure your student will be positioned for success from the first day of the new school year," Sullivan added.
Families seeking help can call the following support lines:
