Woman shot dead in Birmingham in city’s 4th homicide in 48 hours

A violent 48-hour stretch in Birmingham has resulted in the city's fourth homicide since Thursday, following a fatal shooting late Saturday night in the southwest part of the city.

Investigation Underway

Birmingham police officers responded to the 2400 block of Snavely Avenue at 7:35 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman in the front yard of a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. According to Officer De’Rell Freeman, the victim was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Preliminary reports suggest an altercation broke out between multiple individuals, leading to the exchange of gunfire. Authorities have detained two males for questioning in connection with the incident, and detectives are currently working to secure all available leads.

A Violent 48 Hours

This weekend’s tragedy follows a series of violent events, including a mass shooting that left two dead and five injured earlier this week. Additionally, on Friday, one man died following an exchange of gunfire at an extended stay motel.

Crime Trends in Birmingham

The recent surge in violence stands in contrast to the trend reported by Birmingham police earlier in the week. As of Wednesday, officials noted that there had been 17 homicides in the city throughout 2026—a 50% decrease compared to 2025 and a 73% drop from 2024. With this latest incident, the total number of homicide victims in the city this year has reached 21.

"Over the past few days, we’ve had homicides, we’ve seen things happen and we do want to emphasize that we are going to continue working to reduce crime," Freeman stated, "and do everything that we can to mitigate any issues in the city of Birmingham."
