Alabama comedy theatre reports man for ‘hateful anti-gay and anti-trans’ message
Comedy club owner: “They do not silence us or stop us from creating, connecting, and working within our community."
A Huntsville comedy theatre has officially contacted police after a man was caught placing flyers on customer vehicles during a recent event. The flyers contained QR codes leading to hateful anti-gay and anti-trans content.
Incident During Pride Event
Jessica Cotton, a founder of Shenanigans Comedy Theatre—a nonprofit dedicated to improv, comedy, and live arts—reported that the disruption occurred last Friday night. The theatre was hosting a sold-out Pride Month event, described as a diverse, body-positive LGBTQ burlesque show, which drew an audience of approximately 150 people.
According to Cotton, a man arrived around 8:30 p.m. and began leaving the materials on cars in the parking lot. A customer discovered the flyers shortly after the individual left the premises.
Deceptive Tactics
The flyers reportedly utilized the branding of trusted local organizations to mislead recipients. Cotton noted that the materials appeared to come from reputable groups like United Women of Color or 50501, potentially tricking attendees into scanning codes that directed them toward anti-trans rhetoric.
The Huntsville Police Department has not yet issued a comment regarding the incident to 205focus.com. However, the theatre stated they have identified the perpetrator and intend to provide that information to the proper authorities as required.
Standing Firm
In a social media post addressing the situation, the nonprofit emphasized its commitment to the community. While the event serves as a reminder to stay vigilant, the theatre made its stance clear: “They do not silence us or stop us from creating, connecting, and working within our community. Instead, they strengthen our resolve to keep moving forward, speaking up, and doing good.”
