Atlantic hurricane season 2026 begins today: What to expect

The official start of the Atlantic hurricane season is here. As of Monday, June 1, we have entered the 2026 window, which runs through Nov. 30.

Despite the online chatter that ramped up over the past week regarding potential storm development, conditions remained quiet across the tropical Atlantic to kick off the week. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center, which monitors the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, reports that no storm development is expected in the Atlantic Basin for at least the next seven days.

A Potential for a Milder Season

For the first time in several years, the outlook for the season leans toward a more subdued pace. NOAA's pre-season tropical outlook released on May 21 highlights increased odds of having fewer named storms than usual. Historically, an average season consists of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

Forecasters point to the influence of El Nino, which is expected to develop this summer and persist through the fall and winter months. While El Nino years typically see reduced storm activity, experts remind residents that it does not guarantee the U.S. coastline will be spared from hurricane impacts.

Timeline and Naming

The hurricane season typically sees a surge in activity between August and October, with the climatological peak occurring on Sept. 10. Statistically, the first named storm usually forms by June 20, followed by the first hurricane by Aug. 11.

The 2026 storm name list, which is recycled every six years, includes names ranging from Arthur to Wilfried. However, there is one notable change: the name Laura has been replaced by Leah. Following the devastating 2020 season, the World Meteorological Organization retired Laura, Eta, and Iota due to the destruction they caused. Laura was a Category 4 hurricane that struck Louisiana on Aug. 27, 2020, with 150 mph winds and was linked to more than 70 deaths.
