Can Alabama baseball keep dominant momentum going vs USC Upstate in Tuscaloosa Regional?
Alabama will face a team coming off a major upset in the Tuscaloosa regional.
Alabama baseball dominated the opening round of the NCAA tournament’s Tuscaloosa Regional on Friday, securing a commanding 21-3 victory over Alabama State. Now, the Crimson Tide look to carry that offensive surge into Saturday’s matchup against a dangerous USC Upstate squad.
Spartans Riding Historic High
USC Upstate enters the contest with plenty of momentum after pulling off an 8-5 upset against Oklahoma State on Friday. The win marked the first in program history at the NCAA tournament level for the Spartans, who qualified by winning the Big South conference.
The Spartans showed resilience against the Cowboys, overcoming an early deficit and staying consistent throughout the game. Their offense produced three runs in the first inning and two in the eighth to seal the victory.
Focusing on Momentum
Alabama hopes to maintain its blistering offensive pace, though players are focused on team cohesion. "Honestly, we’re just playing for each other right now," UA’s Luke Vaughn said after Friday's win. "We know our lives are on the line this weekend and we don’t want to go home."
USC Upstate head coach Kane Sweeney knows his team faces a tall order against the Tide. Reflecting on how his squad will handle the pressure, Sweeney emphasized the importance of mental resets. "Having the ability to disconnect from the game when we need to and then when we show up tomorrow, having the ability to reconnect with our goal, which is to win," he said.
Injury Watch
The Crimson Tide are monitoring the status of catcher John Lemm, who exited Friday’s game after taking a foul ball off his finger. While Vaughn noted that Lemm was in good spirits in the dugout, his availability for Saturday remains TBD as the team consults with trainers.
Alabama and USC Upstate are scheduled to square off at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday.
