Can Alabama baseball take advantage of Super Regional opportunity?
The Crimson Tide can host a Super Regional if it handles business on Sunday.
Entering the Tuscaloosa Regional, Alabama baseball head coach Rob Vaughn was focused on staying present rather than getting ahead of himself.
"It’s a realistic thing that they understand what lies in front of them," Vaughn said Tuesday regarding the road to the College World Series. "We don’t need to talk about any of that stuff. Just like, at the beginning of the year, we didn’t talk about hosting, we didn’t talk about being a national seed. We didn’t talk about playing in the postseason. It was ‘How good can we play against Washington State?'"
Vaughn emphasized that results follow when the team remains locked into their daily process. "I think when your attention gets pulled in 1,000 different directions, all that does is pull your focus off of Alabama State," he noted. "At the end of the day, the guys know that."
The team certainly maintained that focus, first dismantling Alabama State 21-3, followed by a 7-5 victory over South Carolina-Upstate on Saturday.
A Historic Opportunity
The Crimson Tide is now within striking distance of a significant milestone. UA is looking to host a Super Regional in Tuscaloosa for the first time since 2006. To punch that ticket, the Tide needs a win Sunday evening at 7 p.m. CT against either USC Upstate or Oklahoma State.
Despite the hot start, Vaughn remains grounded. "Job’s not done," he said after Saturday's win. "You don’t get any kind of trophy for being 2-0 to start the regional and making a regional championship game. That’s not what it’s about. This team wants to do bigger and better things."
The Sunday Outlook
Oklahoma State has clawed its way through the loser’s bracket after an initial upset by USC Upstate. The Cowboys narrowly survived an 11-inning battle against Alabama State, secured by a late solo home run from Kollin Ritchie.
USC Upstate, meanwhile, entered the tournament as a dangerous underdog, having never won an NCAA tournament game before this year. Despite falling to Alabama on Saturday, the Spartans have shown resilience, fueled by an offense that head coach Kane Sweeney describes as "dangerous, pretty much one through nine."
USC Upstate and Oklahoma State are set to face off in an elimination game at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday. Whoever survives will face Alabama in the 7 p.m. nightcap. As for the earlier start, Vaughn offered a humorous wish: "I hope they play about 25 innings at 2 o’clock tomorrow. I don’t care if we start at midnight. Let’s make that game go as long as it can go."
