Classic 1990s sitcom star says former child actor’s ‘personality problems’ derailed reboot

If you were holding out hope for a return to the Taylor household, you might want to adjust your expectations. Tim Allen, the star of the iconic 1990s sitcom Home Improvement, recently revealed that a revival of the classic show is likely off the table due to the current struggles of the actors who portrayed his on-screen sons.

Why a Home Improvement Reboot Stalled

Speaking with US Weekly, Allen noted that while there have been discussions about moving forward, the project remains stuck. The "Toy Story 5" actor cited "personality problems" regarding the young men who played Brad, Randy, and Mark as the primary roadblocks to getting the show back on air.

"They’ve got their own issues," Allen told US Weekly. "I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly."

The Challenges with the Taylor Brothers

The sitcom, which spanned eight seasons from 1991 to 1999, followed Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor alongside his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) and their three boys: Zachery Ty Bryan (Brad), Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy), and Taran Noah Smith (Mark).

The cast members have taken vastly different paths since the series finale. Zachery Ty Bryan has faced significant legal trouble in recent years, including a second-degree domestic violence charge in 2025. His history also includes a 2020 arrest for allegedly strangling his then-girlfriend and a 2021 charge involving felony assault and third-degree robbery in Oregon.

Beyond the legal complications, the rest of the on-screen family has largely stepped away from the spotlight. Patricia Richardson noted in a 2024 podcast that Jonathan Taylor Thomas is no longer interested in acting. Thomas has not appeared on screen since a 2015 guest spot on Allen’s Last Man Standing, while Taran Noah Smith has not held an acting credit since a voice role on Batman Beyond back in 1999.
