Iconic Huntsville business kicking off America’s 250 Celebration this weekend

Huntsville is set to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary in style this Memorial Day weekend. Iconic downtown fixture Harrison Brothers Hardware is leading the charge on the courthouse square with a packed lineup of family-friendly events designed to bridge local history with the broader American narrative.

A Piece of History Returns

The centerpiece of the weekend is the triumphant return of the American Signature Quilt. Originally stitched in 1989 to safeguard the future of Harrison Brothers Hardware, the heirloom features an Ohio Star pattern adorned with the autographs of 170 notable figures, ranging from U.S. Presidents and iconic astronauts to legendary playwrights and film stars. Project organizers Lynn Jones and Dale Rhoades spearheaded the initiative, which proved instrumental in preserving one of the city's most cherished landmarks as reported by 205focus.com.

Exhibitions and Artistry

Visitors can dive deeper into the store's survival story through the new exhibition, How to Save a Historic Store in 5 Easy Steps. The creative festivities don't stop there; The Gallery at Harrison Brothers will debut the Signature Art Show. This juried exhibition invites attendees to contemplate the theme, "What America Means to Me," as interpreted by 28 talented Alabama artists.

Hands-On History for All Ages

Young explorers—and those young at heart—can take part in A Signature Scavenger Hunt. This interactive experience encourages guests to hunt for specific artifacts and heirlooms throughout the store. It is a unique chance to see items spanning thousands of years, from tools crafted by Indigenous people in 6,000 BC to equipment used by Huntsville rocket scientists during the 1950s.
