Auburn looks to have a strong summer on the recruiting trail after its annual Big Cat Weekend

Inside Auburn’s first Big Cat Weekend under Alex Golesh

The atmosphere was electric at the Woltosz Football Performance Center this past Saturday as Auburn hosted the 2026 edition of Big Cat Weekend. It marked the first time head coach Alex Golesh presided over the program's signature recruiting event, setting a positive tone for a pivotal summer.

A Change in Pace

While shifting from its traditional late-summer slot to a late-spring window due to recruiting calendar adjustments, the event remained a major draw for the Tigers. Approximately 30 recruits made the trip to campus, trading intense gridiron drills for a day of team-building activities, including a scavenger hunt, a wiffle ball home run derby, and a lively pool party.

For many prospects, the visit was less about X's and O's and more about building personal connections with the coaching staff and their future peers. Four-star class of 2028 offensive lineman Kweli Fielder appreciated the low-pressure environment, noting that the event helped simplify the occasionally stressful recruiting process.

Competition and Connections

The scavenger hunt quickly emerged as the highlight of the day. Four-star linebacker Jeremiah Culpepper was particularly vocal about his group's victory, playfully boasting about the team's strategy and the fun of feeling like a kid again. Beyond the games, the weekend served as a vital tool for the coaching staff to elevate Auburn's standing with high-priority targets.

Prattville's Jayden Aparicio-Bailey, a four-star safety, praised the "amazing" atmosphere, confirming that the Tigers helped their standing in a recruitment that includes elite programs like Clemson and Georgia. Meanwhile, three-star offensive lineman Rance Brown indicated that a commitment could be on the horizon, with Auburn and Kentucky serving as his current top two. George Lamons Jr., who previously committed after the A-Day scrimmage, also returned to the Plains to act as a recruiter for his future class.

Looking Ahead to Summer

As Auburn looks to build on its current 2027 class—which features six commitments and sits at 40th in the 247Sports rankings—the momentum from Big Cat Weekend serves as a critical foundation. Coach Golesh, who previously noted the staff's efforts to "play catch up" since their formation in December, emphasized a persistent approach to the recruiting trail during an April AMBUSH event.

With official visits looming throughout May and June, the coaching staff is aiming to turn these budding relationships into firm commitments. Big Cat Weekend successfully acted as the bridge between spring introductions and the high-stakes evaluation period that lies ahead this summer.
