Jax State softball season ends with shutout loss to Florida State

Jacksonville State's impressive softball campaign came to an abrupt end on Saturday as the Gamecocks fell 11-0 to Florida State in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.

A Tough Finish in Tallahassee

The Gamecocks (45-16) struggled to generate offense against Seminoles pitchers Jazzy Francik and Makenna Reid, recording just four hits in the contest. No. 3 national seed Florida State (50-9) proved dominant, racking up 14 hits and powering past the Gamecocks in five innings via the mercy rule. The Seminoles' offensive surge included home runs from Kennedy Harp, Hayley Griggs, and Jaysoni Beacham.

Despite the difficult result, JSU head coach Julie Boland expressed immense pride in her team's efforts this year. "I can’t say enough how proud I am of this team," Boland said. "I know we didn’t finish the season the way we wanted to; a loss like that is always hard and unfortunately we have to end our season on the loss. I’m proud of their heart, their commitment to the program, and their fight throughout the season."

Missed Opportunities

Jax State's most promising stretch came in the top of the third inning when Haleigh Cushenberry and Emma Elrod logged back-to-back singles. However, Florida State's Jazzy Francik escaped the jam by striking out Morgan Nowakowski, Amber Reed, and Kailey Martin in succession. By that point, the Seminoles had already established a 4-0 lead behind a strong second inning.

Jaliyah Holmes (18-7) took the loss for the Gamecocks, surrendering four runs over 1 2/3 innings.

Looking Back on a Historic Season

Though the postseason run concluded in Tallahassee, it was a landmark year for the program. The Gamecocks won the Conference USA tournament to secure their first NCAA regional appearance since 2017. The team fought hard throughout the weekend, including a narrow 2-1 loss in eight innings to Central Florida during Friday’s opener.

With the win, Florida State (23-3 for Francik) advanced to face Stetson in another elimination matchup, with the survivor moving on to challenge UCF in Sunday’s championship round.
