Largest power transformer manufacturer in North America building new Alabama plant

North America’s largest power transformer manufacturer is bringing a massive new operation to Alabama. Virginia Transformer, headquartered in Roanoke, Va., has selected Muscle Shoals as the site for a sprawling 600,000-square-foot production facility that is set to employ 1,100 people.

A Significant Expansion

The project will take shape on a 90-acre site within the Shoals Research Airpark in Colbert County. Construction is underway immediately, with the company targeting January 2028 for the start of production. This new facility will serve as the firm’s seventh manufacturing site, capable of producing power transformers ranging from two Megavolt-Amperes (MVA) up to 500 MVA to support data centers, renewable energy projects, and utility providers across North America.

Infrastructure and Support

To streamline shipping and supply chain operations, the site features a dedicated Norfolk Southern rail spur. State officials played a major role in landing the project, with Governor Kay Ivey noting that the Shoals area is ready to demonstrate its industrial strength. Earlier this month, Ivey announced that the park would receive roughly $4.5 million in state funding for site preparation and infrastructure through the Growing Alabama Tax Credit program.

Why Alabama?

Alabama Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair confirmed that Alabama outperformed other states in the competition to host this facility. She highlighted the state's combination of robust infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and strong community partnerships as key factors in the decision.

Virginia Transformer CEO Prabhat Jain expressed optimism regarding the expansion, stating, "This project represents the latest step in our ongoing expansion across North America, will create our seventh manufacturing facility, and reflects our confidence in the markets and customers we serve, as well as our dedicated workforce." This Alabama project complements the company's concurrent expansion of its facility in Rincon, Ga.
