Longtime Fairhope soccer coach retires, looks to new challenge

After a storied 26-year run, legendary Fairhope soccer coach Paul Stroud is stepping down from public school teaching. The announcement marks the end of an era for a program he elevated to historic heights.

A Legacy of Excellence

Stroud leaves behind a remarkable record of 447 wins, 145 losses, and 49 ties. Throughout his tenure, he led the Pirates to 20 playoff appearances, 11 area or section championships, and seven trips to the state semifinals, including a state championship title. Even with a brief hiatus while serving with the National Guard, his impact on the field remained undeniable.

Reflecting on his time at the school, Stroud expressed deep gratitude to the Fairhope community. "Fairhope is a brilliant place, and I love those people," Stroud told 205focus.com. "I love principal Jon Cardwell and athletic director Josh Howell and all my fellow coaches. It really is a family in a lot of ways. It was hard to leave, but it’s time."

Culture as the Foundation

Before his long tenure at Fairhope, Stroud served as the head coach at Davidson for four years. He credits his sustained success to prioritizing team culture above all else. "No matter how good the team is or how talented, there are points in almost every game where something will go against you and you have to be able to suffer through and pull together," Stroud said.

This philosophy was on full display during his final season, where the team rebounded from a 2-5 start in February to finish 16-7, ultimately falling to the eventual champion, Auburn, in the Class 7A state semifinals.

What's Next?

While Stroud is moving on from Fairhope, he is not stepping away from coaching entirely. He confirmed he has accepted a new professional challenge, with further details expected to be announced later this week. For now, he leaves with pride in the reputation he built: a program that played with class, intensity, and unwavering unity.
