Marta Kostyuk stuns 4-time tennis champion Iga Swiatek at French Open
None of the players still in the draw have yet lifted the trophy in Paris.
The French Open is guaranteed a new champion on the women's side this year, and two standout athletes from Ukraine are positioning themselves as serious contenders for the title.
Kostyuk Shocks Swiatek
Undefeated on clay this season, 15th-seeded Marta Kostyuk stamped her authority on the tournament Sunday. She reached her first career quarterfinal in Paris by dismantling four-time champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1, effectively spoiling the star's birthday.
Kostyuk’s next match will be against compatriot Elina Svitolina, marking the first time in the professional era (since 1968) that a Ukrainian woman will compete in a Roland Garros semifinal. The seventh-seeded Svitolina earned her spot by surging past Belinda Bencic in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback win.
Reflecting on the milestone amidst the ongoing four-year war in her home country, Svitolina shared her pride: “There’s going to be Ukraine in the semifinals, so it’s already amazing. It’s really inspiring for the next generation to really believe that it is possible one day to play on this court and win.”
A Wide-Open Field
The draw at Roland Garros remains wide open following the exits of high-profile players. With Coco Gauff eliminated Saturday and Swiatek now out, none of the remaining women in the bracket have previously lifted the trophy in Paris. The men’s field is similarly unpredictable following the departures of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, along with the injury-related absence of Carlos Alcaraz.
Men's Tournament Updates
In the men’s draw, teenage sensation Rafael Jodar punched his ticket to his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. After dropping the first two sets, Jodar rallied to defeat Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. He is set to face second-seeded Alexander Zverev, who advanced after beating Jesper de Jong 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-1.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Joao Fonseca continued his impressive run. After his five-set upset of Novak Djokovic, Fonseca took down two-time runner-up Casper Ruud in a 7-5, 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-2 victory. Fonseca now prepares for a clash against 20-year-old Jakub Mensik, who outlasted Andrey Rublev in a grueling 6-3, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 match.
