National WMU in Birmingham buys toy race car kit company

The Birmingham-based National Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) is expanding its reach into youth ministries. The organization officially announced its acquisition of Royal Racers, a woodcraft toy race car kit company, effective May 1.

A Legacy of Racing

Royal Racers has been a staple for the Royal Ambassadors—a mission and activity group for boys in grades one through six often hosted by Baptist churches—for more than four decades. Founded by Frank and May Dean Green in Tennessee, the brand provides the essential kits used for pinewood derby-style competitions.

Sandy Wisdom-Martin, executive director and treasurer of the national WMU, highlighted the unique role these kits play in youth development. "There’s something unforgettable about the excitement of a pinewood derby—the intense preparation and creativity, the anticipation, the cheers at the finish line," Wisdom-Martin said. "WMU is excited to acquire Royal Racers and begin selling RA derby car kits because we know that can be an entry point for children to learn about God’s mission."

Strategic Growth and Connection

The acquisition aims to continue the legacy established by the Green family while providing a new home for the products. Keith Gates, a ministry consultant for national WMU, noted that these cars serve as more than just a hobby. "Men across the world fondly recount how they grew up learning valuable life lessons from godly men while building and racing their derby cars," Gates said. "This acquisition is a huge win for every church investing in that journey."

The WMU has been building momentum in this space for several years, including hosting an annual race for Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) leaders. The convention is set to meet next in Orlando from June 7-10.

Product Availability

Starting in June, the kits will be available for purchase at wmu.com/royalracers. The WMU will fulfill all orders directly from its warehouse in Birmingham. The initial inventory will feature the four most popular derby car kits, including wood blocks, wheels, axles, and assembly instructions. A separate parts accessory kit will also be offered.
