Northeast Alabama rallies to claim juco softball national title in just second year
Eighth-seeded Mustangs use big third inning to knock off Temple College in 20-team Division I tournament.
In a historic turn for a program just entering its second season, Northeast Alabama Community College has claimed the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I softball championship. The Mustangs completed an incredible run on Sunday, defeating Temple College 7-3 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.
A Championship Rally
Despite facing an early deficit after allowing three runs in the top of the first inning, the Mustangs proved their resilience. Northeast Alabama exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third to seize control of the game, finishing their standout season with an impressive 56-4 record.
The offensive spark was ignited by Marti McCluskey, who delivered a clutch two-run single. Francesca Lumpp followed up with an RBI single to tie the contest, and shortly after, Emmorie Burke broke the game open with a massive three-run home run to right-center field. Burke added one more insurance run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Stellar Pitching
Addison Edwards anchored the championship effort from the circle, tossing a complete-game six-hitter. Edwards struck out four and walked two, capping off a remarkable undefeated campaign with a 34-0 individual record.
Tournament Dominance
Northeast Alabama, based in Rainsville and led by coach Joe Guthrie, entered the 20-team tournament as the No. 8 seed. Despite the seeding, they went a perfect 5-0 throughout the championship event. Their path to the title included victories over Gaston College, Odessa College, Paris Junior College, and a 6-4 win against Florida SouthWestern College, who served as last year's national runner-up.
Temple College, the fourth-ranked team and fourth seed entering the tournament, concluded their season with a 58-8 record. For more on the tournament, you can view the original coverage from 205focus.com.
